So early ...

They sprayed against carpet bugs in my apartment this morning, at 7. Not only does this mean I had to go up way early, I also have to roam around for four hours while Mr Poison goes away. And seems I must go through and freeze/wash all my clothes, too, to get any decent chance of getting rid of bugsies. Great fun.

OK, I never really calculated what 100 would have been in base 12, but it's 84. So it's really rather fine, too. 84 reminds of us such things as the book 1984, and also my birth year.

Surely time in base 12 would be much nicer?
Sat, 1 Mar 2008 15:28 – No comments
The best things to do, of course, would be to change hours and so to fit well with a decimal system (or better yet, a binary, octal or hexadecimal), like having 10 hours in day, with 100 minutes, or whatever. That kind of change is pretty big, though, so...
What about keeping the current system, but using base 12 instead? It'd look much more neat! 12, 24 and 60 would in base 12 be 10, 20 and 50. See? Much neater. Preferably, 1 to B would be used as numbers. 100 would not be so nice, though, but how often would you use it? Seconds are good enough most of the time.

Pleasant evening

It has been rather an interesting evening today. First I spent two hours and twenty minutes listening to Richard Stallman, the fellow known for such things as GNU, the Free Software Foundation, and seemingly being friendly while not really being so... or with equal possibility the other way around, it's very hard to tell from just listening to him, really. Anyway, that was interesting (yes I know, I use that word too often) and amusing (but not really in the degrading sense that could be read into those words).
Then I had some kebabs with pineapples and stuff. It wasn't as interesting, but on the other hand it tasted much, much better. And it included pleasant conversation.
Then after a short but pleasant (well, more windy, really, and yes, I will use the word pleasant too many times) stroll, I watched Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which I must say I quite enjoyed, even with all the singing. Certainly a different movie compared to... many other. I can recommended it, especially if you don't mind singing or blood (it's not that much of it, really... blood, that is, not singing -- there's a lot of singing).
So, the evening has left me in a somewhat weird but surprisingly pleasant mood, which is a bit spoiled by the fact that I'll just go and sleep now anyway.

LD 10.5 warmup
Mon, 25 Feb 2008 18:59 – No comments
This weekend, the LD 10.5 warmup (it's like a LD 48h compo, except it's not a compo, and rules are much more lax, no voting etc) took place. I participated and actually turned out a game. Or two. Well, one and a half, maybe.
The most real one is Mr Head and the Cow Drowning (visit link for descriptive post at the LD blog). It's about drowning cows. The theme was 'Weird/Unexpected/Surprise' and I mostly went for the weird part. And it turned out fun. Here's a screenshot:

The second was a small text adventure game called Banana Ship that I made while trying to figure out what to do.
Oh, and in case you don't want to visit the LD blog for downloads, here's download links:
Mr Head and the Cow Drowning
Banana Ship
Both include binaries for Windows and source code.

Update on current state of being

For those who follows my thesis work log, you might know that the presentation and preliminary report are done. This means I'm pretty much finished at university. Not quite, though. The report must obviously pass first, which might require a little work, it is not clear yet. I should put together source code and example, game, too. And I have to 'oppose' (dunno what to call it in English) at another's presentation. And then, hand in some application paper for the degree. But all in all, nothing much really.
So I should be fairly relaxed, as there's nothing to worry about now. Except writing a résumé, finding a job, getting a job, finding an apartment in whatever town the job turns out to be in, cleaning out my student apartment, moving, and then just working for 41 years.

Spot the Me

I didn't find another good picture for the Spot the Nuke game, so for today, instead we're playing Spot the Me.

The sad thing is that I've started getting some bad pixels from my camera. You can't see it above because of the image size, but if I had included full or half size, we could have played Spot the Bad Pixels instead. But it's not as fun.

Georgia
Sun, 3 Feb 2008 01:48 – No comments
I've always thought the default serif font (at least on my systems) was a bit... well, something was wrong with it. It wasn't really very pleasing to the eye. I do usually prefer flowing text as serif, but I haven't done anything about it until today, when I noticed a much more pleasent serif font. I checked it out, and it turned out it was Georgia. So now Georgia is used here, if it's available.
Washing Adventures

I have a very good feeling based on the entirely coincidental fact that I don't know in the least what I'm going to write here. Yeah, feels good.
So, based on something entirely different, just for overusing some words, I'm not entirely going to base this ramblings on anything. No. Not at all. Mmmm... cookies.
So, did I ever tell you about my last attempt at washing? Like, washing clothes, making them clean, you know? You put exhibit A (the clothes) into exhibit B (some kind of machine), then for some weird reason also inserts exhibit C (some kind of smelly white powder) into exhibit B. Yeah. Then you push button, receive time. Er.. no. Push button, insert time, receive, with some luck, clean clothes (what was previously exhibit A). Let's call them exhibit Not Dry. The problem at that point is that exhibit Not Dry is not entirely dry. Instead it's more or less wet. So, then you insert exhibit Not Dry into exhibit D (which is another machine). Then, once more, you push button, insert time, receive washed clothes. Or rather, dry clothes. Please note, though, that this is not the same button as you pushed last time. So, that's what I mean. With washing. Any fool can do it. Many do. Yeah. So onwards with the story already.
I was going to wash some clothes. The clothes were mighty dirty, and not fit for wearing on any kinds of social occasions (such as walking on a sidewalk). So, my brilliant plan was to wash them. I booked a washing time slot in Mr Washing Place A. This is the washing place in this very building where I live. There's 4 exhibit A machines, 2 exhibit D machines, and 2 exhibit Unmentioned machines (you can ignore these).
Upon entering Mr Washing Place A, with lots of dirty clothes (clothes, that wouldn't they be washed, would leave me with unwashed and dirty clothes!), good intentions, innocence etc.
First visual input (except, maybe, hey look! a room!) was that exhibit A #2 was broken. It had a note on it saying this very thing. Second input was that exhibit A #3 seemed fairly broken as well. This was confirmed by pushing a button (not same button as any of those mentioned above), which did entirely not open the hatch (door, thingy) to the machine. But it should have. Great, half of all exhibits A was broken.
I inspect the other exhibit A machines lightly. They seem fine at first inspection, but, yeah you can tell can't you? They didn't work either. Of course, I didn't notice this until I had actually stuffed them with dirty clothes and even (the wasteful horrors of it!) inserted exhibit B into one. Thing was, they didn't start when I pushed button (and this means the very first button mentioned). This was when I noticed that they didn't select a program when you turned the funny round dial thingy. And they always said "finished / remove laundry" (although one of them said that in Polish or something, I believe).
Consequently, I uninserted the dirty clothes into exhibit A #1 and 4, unremoved them from my bag (big plastic blue bag thingy, good for carrying dirty clothes, available at IKEA, get them while they're hot), and left Mr Washing Place A, somewhat unhappy. And irked. And some other things.
Of course, being Mr Clever (or so I wish), I booked a new time slot at Mr Washing Place B (which resides in the very building almost next to this one, and there's a trendy tunnel underground that connects them (this building and that), in a not entirely inconspicuous, but extremely handy, way). I had to wait a while, of course (like 1h30min).
In the end, all exhibits A and exhibits D worked well there. And there were even more of them there, twice as many! Only you can't book that many, but you don't need that anyway, so, yeah, that turned out well in the end too.
Don't you just love those happy endings?

While I haven't got around to getting a link section into this slog, other people have link sections in their blogs. Some even link me. One such blog is Miscellanea 2.0, run by my friend Elver. It's mostly about movies and writing, but anything might turn up really, and it can be interesting. Maybe you want to visit it?

Oh hi there I'm just writing to tell you nothing at all. Not sure why I do this I just had one of those 'I want to get things optimal' feelings. You know getting life sorted out thingy. Only the chance of this feeling existing tomorrow is next to nonexistent. Is like, in the long run it would be better if I got around to teach myself to use proper keyboard typing (I'm currently using a kind of ad-hoc typing which is the result of just typing for a lot of years), only if I force myself to it now, I'll write painfully slow for some time. Or another example, like sitting 'correctly' which is best in the long run, only now it's just really bothersome and painful, because years if slouching has left me with very puny back muscles. I can probably expand this list to infinity (well, no). Thing is that right now I feel like getting all these things in order, only I've had this feeling before -- they usually comes up late at night and by the next day I'm once again too lazy or not patient enough, or if not by the next day, then at least by the next week. Putting it in a different way, my brain is too susceptible of reverting to its greedy algorithm. This makes life improvement very hard. Yeah I know, I should stop rambling on, and stop complaining, and stop copying my laztupid entry. But I can't help wondering how other people do this... or are they just the same as me?
Poor squirrels
Sat, 24 Nov 2007 00:17 – No comments
The sun was high on the sky, leaving them sweating like mad in the desert, only they were not in the desert, they were in a forest. With trees. And lumps of rocks here and there. It was all a bit too much for the squirrels, so they all decided to attack. It was bloody. It was horrible. It was really, really odd. But the squirrels didn't win. They failed hard.

- Of course not, silly.
